The Wild Knight

by

Geoffrey Humphrys

The tale of a brave Scottish King

This historical novel tells the tumultuous story of King James IV of Scotland. Starting in 1488 when the 16 year old Prince James discovers that his father has been murdered in a clash with conspiring nobles, he enforces his royal authority through sheer determination and becomes a courageously triumphant jousting champion, acclaimed as The Wild Knight. He negotiates the trials and tribulations of being a King, husband, father, lover and friend before finally and tragically leading his army to the Battle of Flodden in 1513, fought for what he believed to be right for Scotland.

Geoffrey Humphrys was born in London and educated at Dame Owen’s School in Islington. After service in the War as ground and aircrew with the RAF Volunteer Reserve, he qualified as a primary school teacher, with English and History as his special subjects. As part of his studies he started his research on the period of James III and James IV of Scotland, and he continued with this subsequently as time allowed. All the time spent on meticulous research was eventually to pay dividends in the form of the historical accuracy of The Wild Knight and an understanding of what life was like in that time.

As a part-time freelance journalist he has had thousands of articles published in newspapers and magazines, as well as six science fiction novelettes. His first novel, The Time to Live, was published as runner-up of Ward Lock’s First Novel Competition in 1959. At around this time his classroom work led to a recommendation to an educational book publisher. Over the next eighteen years he wrote, on average, one book each year for this market. In the meantime his teaching career culminated in the headmastership of a large JMI school at North Walsham in Norfolk. Eventually the school grew so large that it needed to be split in two. Although offered the choice of which school to head, he decided to retire. Since then he has stayed in North Walsham, continuing to write freelance and completing The Wild Knight. A married man with four adult children, seven grandchildren and one great grandchild, he is a member of the Royal Photographic Society with an LRPS distinction.
