Begging Dogs and Happy Pigs

by

Jason Clark

What is life really like in Cuba 50 years after Fidel Castro’s revolution?

This book is based on the author’s experiences when he was living in Cuba to perfect his Spanish. Although much of it is light-hearted in tone, it provides great insight into the way of life of the ordinary Cubans with whom he lived, while at the same time giving a balanced perspective of the reality of this culture and providing good advice for anyone intending to visit the island. The author also describes some of the political intrigue surrounding the country and shares his thoughts on Fidel Castro and the anti-American establishment.

Throughout the book there is a sense that the Cuban people do not experience the personal freedom that we have in the West but, despite this, their happiness, singing, laughter and close family ties show they have learnt how to accept this as the norm, not to be questioned openly.  The author learns much from his close contact with the people, and along the way his fascinating voyage of discovery becomes a voyage of self-discovery and self-development too.

Jason Clark was born in the UK but emigrated to France in his teens. Having studied at the Universities of Reading, Grenoble and Lyons, he was for a time a professional actor and also had exhibitions of his sculpture in London and Paris. He now lives on his boat in the Channel Islands and teaches languages.
